Esplanade of Woodmere sits at 130 Irving Place, in the heart of the Five Towns. Most of our families live close enough to visit on the way home from work, and that turns out to matter a great deal more than families expect when they first start looking.
Why Proximity Matters More in Memory Care
When a family is choosing a community, distance usually gets weighed against everything else: the building, the staff, the price. It deserves more weight than it normally gets.
With dementia, the frequency of visits matters more than their length. A twenty-minute visit four times a week does more than a three-hour visit once every two weeks.
Short, familiar, repeated contact is what sustains recognition and routine. Long gaps do the opposite, however good the intention behind them.
The practical test is simple. Can you drop in without it becoming an expedition? If visiting requires clearing an afternoon, it will happen less often than you plan for, and that is nobody’s failing. It is just what happens to a long drive over a year.
This matters most for spouses. For many couples, a move into memory care is the first time in fifty years they have slept in different places. Being close enough to visit daily is often the difference between that move feeling like a loss and feeling like a continuation.
The Towns Our Families Come From
Our immediate neighbors
The Five Towns

We are part of this community, not near it. Families from the Five Towns visit daily without it becoming a journey, and that proximity is the single most common reason local families choose us.
It also means the rhythms our residents already know are the ones they keep. The holidays fall when they have always fallen. The kitchen is Vaad Kosher certified. The faces, the language and the calendar are familiar rather than newly learned, which for someone living with dementia is not a small comfort.

We are minutes from the Nassau and Queens line and serve families from across the borough. For families in Far Rockaway and the surrounding neighborhoods we are often closer than communities within Queens itself.

Central and North Nassau

Families across central Nassau usually come to us for two things that are genuinely hard to find together in this county: a Vaad Kosher certified kitchen, and a community that does memory care and nothing else. Most communities offer one or the other. Very few offer both.
If you are traveling from this part of the county, come for a longer first visit and then judge honestly how often you would realistically make the trip. We would rather you weighed that properly than discovered it later.
25 to 55 minutes away
Closer by train than the map suggests
Manhattan
Manhattan
Manhattan is roughly 60 to 75 minutes by car, and a number of our families make that trip regularly rather than settle for a community closer to home that they like less. Woodmere is also on the Long Island Rail Road’s Far Rockaway Branch, so the train is a real alternative to driving.
Train times vary depending on where in Manhattan you set off from and the time of day, so it is worth checking the timetable for your own route before you judge the distance. Most families find the journey more manageable than the map suggests.
As often as you like. There are no visiting hours to work around, and we would always rather see you more often for less time than the reverse.
We live further away than the towns listed here. Can our relative still move in?
Yes. The towns above are simply where most of our families live, not a boundary. What matters is whether the distance lets you visit as often as you want to, and that is worth an honest conversation before anyone commits.
Is it better to move a parent closer to us, or keep them near their old neighbourhood?
Usually closer to whoever will visit most. Familiar surroundings help, but familiar people help more, and a parent near their old street whom nobody visits is the harder outcome.
Can we visit before deciding?
Please do, and take your time. We also offer short-term and respite stays, so your relative can spend real time here before anyone commits to anything.
Not Sure Whether We Are Close Enough?
Call and ask. We will tell you honestly, and if another community is genuinely a better fit for your family’s geography, we will say so.
